Koki 1611 (951)
December 2, 1611 - ★A magnitude 8.1 earthquake and tsunami kill over 3,000 horses and people around the east coast of the Tohoku region in Japan.
There is a very strong possibility that the earthquake was actually an artificial tsunami created in accordance with the date of the compilation of the Gosen Wakashu, an imperial anthology of Japanese waka. According to the old Japanese record, there was little damage by the earthquake though the tsunami was destructive.
The date of the earthqukae, October 28, 1611 (Japanese traditional calendar), was chosen after the date, October 28, 951 (Japanese traditional calendar year, Koki 1611). To tell the truth, the compilation of the Gosen Wakashu started in 951 (Japanese traditional calendar year, Koki 1611) and was completed on October 28, 953 (Japanese traditional calendar year, Koki 1613).
Many Ainu, who were indigenous people in Japan but have been almost exterminated due to the consistent ethnic cleansing, were killed by the tsunami.
